NAME

M_STOP - STREAMS stop output message

FORMAT

The M_STOP message block is a datab(9) structure and associated data buffer that contains unstructured data.

An M_STOP message is a high priority message that consists of a single M_STOP message block.

INTERFACE

STREAMS.

DESCRIPTION

The M_STOP message tells a device to stop its output. M_STOP and M_START(9) are intended to produce momentary pauses in a device's output, not to turn devices on or off.

The message format is not defined by STREAMS and its use is developer dependent. The M_STOP and M_START(9) messages may be considered a special case of an M_CTL(9) message. The use and format of the M_STOP message forms part of a service interface defintion.

M_STOP messages cannot be generated directly by a user level process. M_STOP messages arriving at the Stream head will be discarded (ignored and freed). M_STOP messages can be generated and consumed by drivers and modules.

USAGE

ldterm(4) and STREAMS-based terminals and pseudo-terminals send this message downstream to start output of a half-duplex terminal device.

EXAMPLES

See ldterm(4).

SEE ALSO

M_START(9), M_STARTI(9), M_STOPI(9), ldterm(4), datab(9), msgb(9).

COMPATIBILITY

The M_STOP STREAMS message is compatible with SVR 4.2 MP STREAMS, and implementations based on SVR 4, with the following portability considerations:

---
M_STOP is has the wrong message type value on older versions of LiS[1].
Portable STREAMS drivers and modules will use Linux Fast-STREAMS[2] instead of LiS[1].
---
Binary compatibility is not guaranteed.

See STREAMS(9) for additional compatibility information.

CONFORMANCE

SVR 4.2 MP STREAMS[3].

HISTORY

The M_STOP message first appeared in SVR 3[4].
