What are the licensing terms for OpenSS7?

Description: OpenSS7 Frequently Asked Questions #16.

Please see our Licensing Terms page for current information on licensing.

Current Components

The following components are current products contained in OpenSS7. The entire work (collection) is licensed strictly under the AGPL3 license. Note that OpenSS7 manuals are distributed for the most part under the GFDL. OpenSS7 manual pages are distributed under a more general documentation license that simply disclaims warranty. Some interface specification manuals (DLPI, NPI, TPI) are distributed under the UNIX International license (see `LICENSES' in the package). Test programs and MIBs are an exception, see the Licensing Terms page. If in doubt, contact OpenSS7 Corporation.

Linux Fast-STREAMS (LfS)

OpenSS7 Linux Fast-STREAMS is publicly released under the GNU Affero General Public License Version 3, with the option for commercial license. If you are interested in licensing terms different than AGPL3, please see our Licensing Terms page and the home page of OpenSS7 Corporation.

STREAMS Networking XNS

The XNS product might contain some components released under GPL2+ by other authors (e.g. LDL): OpenSS7 distributes this code under GPL3, as is our option under GPL2+. All OpenSS7 software in this package is release under AGPL3, with the option to commercial license.

STREAMS SS7, ISO, VoIP and other stacks and applications

All OpenSS7 STREAMS protocol stacks and applications are released under AGPL3. The copyrights are held by OpenSS7 Corporation. If you are interested in licensing terms which are different from the AGPL3, license, please see our Licensing Terms page and the home page of OpenSS7 Corporation.

Otherwise, modifications and applications linked to the OpenSS7 STREAMS stacks and applications must also be licensed under AGPL3.

SNMP MIBs

The OpenSS7 SNMP MIBs are also distributed under AGPL3, however, they include the additional condition than if modified must be placed outside of OpenSS7's private MIB tree.

Test Programs

The OpenSS7 test programs used to test the OpenSS7 stack are licensed under different terms than the GPL. These programs are only provided to demonstrated the usability, conformance and stability of the OpenSS7 stack and may not be distributed, modified or copied in any way. These programs are the property of OpenSS7 Corporation. For licensed use of these programs for any other purpose, please contact OpenSS7 Corporation.

Contributed test programs are the property of the respective copyright holders.

Deprecated Components

The following components are deprecated: the licensing terms provided here are for historical purposes only.

Linux STREAMS (LiS)

OpenSS7 release of Linux STREAMS (LiS) are released under the GNU Affero General Public License Version 3. However, because OpenSS7 owns copyright on modification made to the GCOM releases, if you are interested in the original LGPL2+ licensing terms, please see our Licensing Terms page and the home page of OpenSS7 Corporation.

Otherwise, modifications and application linked to the OpenSS7 Linux STREAMS (LiS) releases are licensed under the GNU Affero Public License Version 3.

Linux Kernel Version

The OpenSS7 Linux Kernel stack is licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License Version 2 (only). However, the copyright holder (author) reserves all rights. This means that if you are interested in licensing terms which are different from the GPL Version 2 license, you are free to discuss this with the copyright holders on the original works. Modifications to the OpenSS7 Linux Kernel stack are licensed under the GNU General Public License Version 2 by nature of the GPL licensing of the primary work. For other licensing terms on modifications to the OpenSS7 stack, please contact the respective copyright holders.

Nothing in the GPL Version 2 licensing of the Linux kernel version of the SS7 stack should be construed as a restriction on its use by commercial applications. Just because the Linux Kernel version (sockets) stack is GPL'ed does not mean that applications which use the OpenSS7 stack are necessarily open source or freely available to the public.

Be careful that you do not confuse the Linux Kernel (sockets) version, which is now deprecated, with the STREAMS version which does not permit proprietary programs to be linked without separate licensing.
